Thousands of kilometers separate Italy and Kenya, yet for Roberto Brundisini, Africa has never felt distant. After living and working across the continent for more than twenty years, Africa became more than a place of work. It became part of his story, his understanding of the world, and ultimately, part of his heart.

Throughout those years, Roberto witnessed both the promise and the challenges of international cooperation. He encountered projects that brought positive change and others that struggled to connect with the realities of the communities they sought to serve. These experiences shaped his understanding of what meaningful development should look like: local ownership, dignity, and long-term growth.

Today, that conviction has taken a new and significant step forward with the official registration of Tuendelee Italia, a community committed to supporting the mission of Tuendelee Foundation in Kenya through sponsorship, partnership, and shared purpose.

For Roberto, however, this journey did not begin with registration documents or organizational milestones.

“My story with Tuendelee goes back even to the time when Tuendelee was not yet born,” he reflects. “It has been a slow but steady process of awareness.”

What eventually drew him to the Foundation was not simply its mission, but its origin.

When Roberto first met Gaha (Founder and Team Leader, Tuendelee Foundation) years ago, she was a brilliant student with great potential. Later, he learned that she had dedicated herself to helping deserving young men and women pursue university education. At first, he saw it as a meaningful but straightforward initiative. Over time, he came to understand that there was something much deeper behind it.

“First of all, it was not planned overseas and then imported locally, with all the strings attached,” he says. “It was conceived and led by a professional who had gone all the way through the university process in Kenya and abroad. She knew her people, their struggles, their ambitions, their dreams and all the obstacles in their way.”

That understanding became the foundation of his belief in Tuendelee’s vision.

What makes Tuendelee unique, in Roberto’s view, is its focus on creating pathways for growth rather than providing temporary relief. While immediate assistance has its place, the Foundation invests in people, equipping them with the tools, skills, and support needed to shape their own futures.

“Opportunity,” he says, “is the key word — not alms.”

To him, this approach preserves dignity while fostering empowerment. It is about walking alongside young people as they pursue their ambitions, not placing them in a position of dependence.

This belief is closely tied to Roberto’s broader vision for Africa and its future leaders.

A Vision Rooted in African Futures:

Drawing on Nelson Mandela’s famous words, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you may use to change the world,’ Roberto speaks passionately about the role young scholars can play in shaping the continent’s future.

“It is my most cherished hope that the young people educated thanks to the Foundation may contribute greatly to the birth of a continental conscience,” he says, “capable of directing development processes that may eventually bring a dignified life to each African citizen.”

His vision extends far beyond academic achievement. He dreams of an Africa led by thinkers, innovators, professionals, and leaders who are confident in shaping solutions rooted in African realities and aspirations.

“There are signs, here and there, of growing awareness,” he says. “I sincerely hope and pray that this generation of graduates may lead the next wave of transformation.”

The creation of Tuendelee Italia is therefore more than an administrative milestone. It represents the growth of a community united by a shared belief in human potential and the power of investing in future generations.

For Roberto personally, this commitment has become a source of purpose and fulfillment.

“I have no doubts that the most rewarding part of being involved with this community is to stay alive through purpose-driven service,” he says. “Working for someone’s growth and progress is the most vitalizing activity one may get involved in.”

As Tuendelee Italia begins this new chapter, it stands as a reminder that meaningful partnership is not about charity flowing in one direction. It is about people from different backgrounds choosing to walk together, investing in potential, sharing responsibility, and building a future where more young people can thrive.
